Part E: You, the Critic of you Work.

Evaluating My Writing Skills

I Can Only Promise

This piece was inspired by Faith B’s blog from last semester it can be found here. Faith, through her blog title, dropped a “breadcrumb,” about the Red Thread of Fate which I was finally able to weave into through this piece. I’m proud of this piece because I was able to explore a different voice and idea, this was refreshing and also inspired me to change my blog theme.

Title –> The title was inspired by a comment I saw on Tumblr that was speaking about reasons to not commit suicide, which is integral to this piece.

17 Word Summary –> I Can Only Promise explores the idea of reincarnation and a specific reincarnate’s impact and influence on a girl planning to commit suicide.

Purpose & Audience –> The purpose of this piece was to bring attention to how important it is to be kind everyone, you never know how your words may impact someone. In terms of audience, I intended for this blog to be read by as many people as possible so I put it up on this blog.

Influence –> This piece was mostly inspired by Faith’s exploration of the Red Thread of Fate on her blog last year and the idea of people reincarnating in a movie theatre – which, I saw on Tumblr.

Craft & Style –> I explored the use of a more authentic realistic voice by “toning” down my lyrical and poetic style and diction. This allowed for a more accessible voice, which is a different and new thing for me.

Experimentation, Revision, Feedback –> This piece was a major experimentation for me because it was a topic that I haven’t explored with I voice I haven’t utilized. However, I am proud of the result as this was the third draft I had written before I polished and posted it.

Once Upon A Time

I have always been a lover of spoken word poetry and Shane Koyczan, who is the inspiration behind this piece. Once Upon A Time is an emulation of Shane’s Troll piece.

Title –> Throughout this semester’s CRW class, we spent a lot of time analyzing and reading pieces based on childhood memories and fairytales. This fostered a desire to integrate that into one of my pieces this was the result.

17 Word Summary –> Once Upon A Time explores the implications of cyberbullying on an individual’s mind and actions.

Purpose & Audience –> I wrote and posted this piece on my blog with the hopes that it would get seen by as many individuals as possible because cyberbullying is such a prevalent topic in the 21st century.

Influence –> Shane Koyczan.

Craft & Style –> This was my first attempt at a more “spoken word” like poetry, and I would definitely like to explore that style more.

Experimentation, Revision, Feedback –> This piece, like the previous one, went through many drafts until I felt like the piece was capable of representing such an important topic.
